Do You Need a Visa to Travel to China?
Right now, travelers from around 50 countries can visit China visa-free for up to 30 days. So you may not need a visa at all. Check the official list of visa-free countries.
240-Hour Visa-Free Transit
Even if your country isn’t on that list, you may still qualify for China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy, often called the 10-day visa-free transit policy. It allows eligible travelers to stay in China for up to 10 days without applying for a visa.
To qualify, you must:
Hold a passport from one of the 55 eligible countries
Travel through mainland China on your way to another country or region
Have a confirmed onward ticket with a departure date and seat
Enter and leave through an eligible port
Stay within the permitted areas and leave within 240 hours
The key word here is transit. This policy is designed for people traveling through mainland China on their way to another country or region, so if you intend to use it, you need to plan your route carefully. For example:
U.S. → Mainland China → U.S. ❌
U.S. → Mainland China → Hong Kong / Japan → U.S. ✅

Applying for a Tourist Visa
If neither of these visa-free options applies to you, you can apply for a regular tourist visa, and it’s really not that complicated.
For U.S. citizens, China offers a 10-year multiple-entry tourist visa. That means you apply once, get the visa, and can use the same visa to travel to China over the next 10 years. It’s a really good deal!
And here’s a practical tip: if the paperwork feels overwhelming or you need help preparing and submitting the application, check your local Chinese supermarket or Chinatown. You can often find a travel or visa agency nearby that can help with the application for a reasonable fee.
